On the nose, you pick up dark fruit and higher alcohol. The first sip is filled with <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">dark fruit - plumb, raspberry, black cherry. The middle of the wine is </span><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;">smooth, full bodied, and starts to dry out. The wine finishes with a slightly spicy,</span><span style="font-family: "helvetica neue light" , , "helvetica" , "arial" , sans-serif;"> soft lingering finish. The bourbon barrel aging helps make this a full bodied Zinfandel. It would pair well with steak and/or cheese.</span></div>

I haven't updated this in a bit, so here is the rundown of early 2016.</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;"><br></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Rfm9p38RCCo/Vx1N8CymqGI/AAAAAAAAA_g/vIgzejTh0RU/s640/blogger-image-394553752.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Rfm9p38RCCo/Vx1N8CymqGI/AAAAAAAAA_g/vIgzejTh0RU/s640/blogger-image-394553752.jpg"></a></div></div></div><div><br></div><div>The first event was the Herb Paraons Trail Half Marathon in Collierville, TN. We were on our way to New Orleans, so I figured I may as well find a race. I was happy to set the course record that day.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vg3wTpYNN9g/Vx1OASIHQ0I/AAAAAAAAA_s/UXb2eNeFYhs/s640/blogger-image--1821926866.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vg3wTpYNN9g/Vx1OASIHQ0I/AAAAAAAAA_s/UXb2eNeFYhs/s640/blogger-image--1821926866.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>NOLA!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A3-6tstQErg/Vx1NzlN4HrI/AAAAAAAAA_E/-xYK522TIOk/s640/blogger-image--466503536.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-A3-6tstQErg/Vx1NzlN4HrI/AAAAAAAAA_E/-xYK522TIOk/s640/blogger-image--466503536.jpg"></a></div></div><div><br></div><div>After race/vacation, I was back in IL for the F^3 Lakefront Half Marathon. I actually forgot that I wanted to race Miami or Austin, so I stayed local. I was thrilled to walk away with a new half marathon PR of 1:13:02...it may have only been a 3 second PR, but a PR is a PR!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MM3mJiFn6Yc/Vx1N02leqHI/AAAAAAAAA_I/rMEWPEdiFec/s640/blogger-image-1315238377.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-MM3mJiFn6Yc/Vx1N02leqHI/AAAAAAAAA_I/rMEWPEdiFec/s640/blogger-image-1315238377.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">From there, it was time to focus on the Mercedes Marathon in Birmingham, Alabama. I was thrilled to be able to lay down a big PR. So, I went over to Ohio for the Buzzard Day 50k. I wanted to use it as a last long effort before American River. I ended up setting the course record on a sloppy, and fun course.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YRyCoAFwTow/Vx1OByszKWI/AAAAAAAAA_w/wzwjFwGsi9A/s640/blogger-image--942751894.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-YRyCoAFwTow/Vx1OByszKWI/AAAAAAAAA_w/wzwjFwGsi9A/s640/blogger-image--942751894.jpg"></a></div><br></div>Buzzard Day was a great tune up for the American River 50 - Folsom to Auburn, CA. I mean, it's really not hard to convince me that a CA trip is needed. I ended up finishing 4th at American River, behind Chris Denucci, Chris Wehan, and Ian Sharman. I went to run an aggressive race, and was leading until mile 42...and then the wheels fell off. However, I have no regrets, and I'm definitely excited about future races.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CRox_y_SUyc/Vx1N1rwjGII/AAAAAAAAA_M/D_v7ANRk4Iw/s640/blogger-image-111808766.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-CRox_y_SUyc/Vx1N1rwjGII/AAAAAAAAA_M/D_v7ANRk4Iw/s640/blogger-image-111808766.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>We then got to see Seattle...</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bpMAuByyYc4/Vx1N2ywGBLI/AAAAAAAAA_Q/EejM_1OvVwo/s640/blogger-image--30639446.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-bpMAuByyYc4/Vx1N2ywGBLI/AAAAAAAAA_Q/EejM_1OvVwo/s640/blogger-image--30639446.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>And, Vancouver...</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-T4ppmNc7bHQ/Vx1N-0KPRPI/AAAAAAAAA_o/Vb2hJcVr0BA/s640/blogger-image--471448799.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-T4ppmNc7bHQ/Vx1N-0KPRPI/AAAAAAAAA_o/Vb2hJcVr0BA/s640/blogger-image--471448799.jpg"></a></div> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">And meet an Instagram friend..,</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Srb2KX8Bdbg/Vx1N5nC3OuI/AAAAAAAAA_Y/oUfBscy4zUM/s640/blogger-image-511767715.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Srb2KX8Bdbg/Vx1N5nC3OuI/AAAAAAAAA_Y/oUfBscy4zUM/s640/blogger-image-511767715.jpg"></a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">I finally made the decision to move "home base" back to IL, so I flew out west to get my stuff and drive it back. This happened to be a hard race report for me to write. I am physically, emotionally, and mentally tired. My Grandpa passed away the week of Xterra Trail World Championship. Instead of Hawaii, I ended up back in Chicago. Then, my flight from Chicago to LA was cancelled, due to a crack in the windshield, so I had a 24 hour layover in the Windy City. By the time I made it to CA, I was drained and didn’t know if I really wanted to race 50k.</div>

<br /></div>
<span style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">My plan for Malibu Canyon 50k was pretty simple. Run the flats hard, don’t give up too much time while climbing, and bomb the downhill sections. I raced MC as my first ultra in 2014, so I was pretty familiar with the course. I felt that if I could hold the leaders to less than a 3 minute gap to the top of the 2nd climb (mile 23), I would have time to still run them down on the descents and flat section.</span><br />
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
The first mile or so of the race is flat. Perfect. I got out quick and used the flat sections to put a gap between Dean and Mario. I remembered them from the previous year, and they are strong climbers. There was another dude a few meters in front of me, and he looked strong. I wasn’t sure if he was running the 25k or 50k, but I was afraid to ask. a bit over a mile into the race, right before the first water crossing I asked, “Are you doing the 25k or 50k?” Luckily he said he was running 25k, and then mumbled something about me going out quick for the 50k. Turns out he had just finished 3rd at Xterra Trail Worlds the previous weekend.</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
Going out quick? i know something about that. Last year I came through 25k around 1:52…3-4 minutes under the 25k course record and still had another lap to run. oops! I ended up finishing broken in 4:35…absolutely hating the 50k, but in love with the challenge. I was determined to not make the same mistake this year.</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
When the climbing started, I decided to back off the effort. I have had a few blowups from trying to climb too aggressive, so I used this time to focus on hydration and nutrition. I don’t run all of the climbs, I actually power hike a lot of it. I was having issues with both achilles going into the first climb, and I was seriously considering dropping out. I didn’t think I would be able to climb to the top of the canyon, let alone do a second loop. But, I thought about it, and convinced myself that if I could climb for a little less than 2 more miles, I would finally get to start descending and could drop out at 25k.</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
As I was climbing, I saw Dean gaining on me. I wasn’t sure that I could hold him off on loop 1, but I figured I may as well put some more energy into holding him off to get a bigger gap into loop 2. Somehow I made it to the top of the climb before him, and was able to start the descent — alone! My first 3 miles on the descent were 5:33, 5:53, and 5:53. Somewhere during the 5:53, I blew out my knee and tweked my IT Band. My worst nightmare. Luckily I had KT Tape on my ITB so I felt like I had some support, but definitely not enough. I was only 20k in, could I run for another 30k in pain?</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
I arrived that the 25k mark around 1:52. F**K!! Been there before. I knew it was going to be a rough second loop, but the bright side was my achilles were finally feeling better. About half a mile into my 2nd loop, I saw 2nd and 3rd coming up the stairs on loop 1. At that point I realized I had ~6 minutes on the chase pack. I had hoped to arrive at 25k <2 minutes behind the leaders, so to be up was great. At that point I realized I had a legit shot at possibly winning the race.</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
I pushed hard through the flat section, and pushed even harder trying to make it up the climb. I remember getting passed at mile 21.3 and 22.8 last year, but I made it to those marks without being passed. I looked back and still didn’t see anyone coming up behind me. I was relieved. There was just one more nasty climb, and then its downhill or flat. Leaving the aid station I looked back and still didn’t see anybody. Starting the climb to the climb to the descent I was scared. I knew these dudes are strong, and I was not going to be able to descend as quickly due to my knee.</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
The descent and flat section to the MASH aid station is kind of one big blur. I just tried to find the most direct route down the switchback and really had to hold back. I was super happy to finally get to flat land again. With 5k to go, I was just hoping there wasn’t a storm brewing behind me, but I wasn’t going to look back!</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
There is about a half mile section of road to finish the race. I made it up the stairs and onto the pavement and realized I was going o be a couple minutes under the course record. At that point I just told myself the faster I finished, the faster I could get off my legs. I crossed the finish line completely shattered and so alive. I was just so relieved to actually have things work out. I was 29 minutes faster this year compared to last year. This race has been in the back of my mind since crossing the finish line last year.</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">

<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I’m not afraid to race on courses with a lot of climbing, I just know that my strength is not in the hills. 2015 has been a year of exploring and challenges, but I have been learning so much. I still am not sure how I managed to win a 50 miler and 50k in less than a month, but I am extremely grateful and excited. I have such an awesome support crew and I am glad that I have been able to race well for them.</div>

Also, it was great to meet Seth, Paul, and Alex. We’ve been following each other in Instagram for over a year, and it was great to finally put a face with a profile. I am definitely going to need to do some more CA training when I get settled back into Vegas. Also, Alex ran a big 50k PR on that nasty course! Also, thanks to Rylan and Nikki for letting me stay with them. It's always fun to catch up with old college teammates/friends.</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">

<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
So what is next? I am not sure. I will be back in IL for the holidays, and then it is kind of up in the air. I have considered running Austin 3M Half Marathon, or Carlsbad Half Marathon, or a fun trail race in January. I would like to get in a road marathon, trail 50 mile, and a 10k on the track this spring also. Should be fun.</div>

The last couple months have been full of racing, training, and moving. I seem embrace change and handle it well, but I would definitely say there has been a lot going on.</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
The plan was to come to Las Vegas and spend my last four weeks heading into the Indianapolis Monumental Marathon on November 7. I had a few different sea level options, but Vegas was the best deal. After a summer of training at 10,200ft, I really just felt like my leg speed was a little behind where it needs to be for Indianapolis. The idea of warm weather and endless training options was nice. I really enjoyed the week I spent here earlier this year -- training in Valley of Fire, Lake Mead, Red Rock Canyon, Bootleg Canyon, and Death Valley. After being here for a few weeks, I have decided that I am going to stay until May, before returning to CO. This opens up quite a few racing opportunities for the earlier months in the year. CA, AZ, and UT are all a short drive, and have many great races.</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">
So, here we are a couple days after Indianapolis Monumental Marathon, and I was a DNS. I really wanted to race, but I just did not feel my leg speed was where it needed to be. I felt stuck. But, the good news is I am racing the Tunnel Hill 50 Mile this weekend. I didn’t have the gears I needed for the marathon, but the strength and fitness is there to use it on a flat/fast 50 miler. I am pretty excited to be racing this weekend. They are offering $500 for a new course record, so I am going for it. The current record is 6:20.</div>
<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">

<div style="font-family: -apple-system-font; font-size: 12px; line-height: 16px;">

This is only my second attempt at racing 50 miles, so I still have plenty to learn. I really am not sure how my body is going to react while racing a flat, sea level 50 miler. Racing a flat even is quite a bit different than Silver Rush (10,200 ft up to 12,000ft, with 7,000ft of elevation gain). In the mountains, you can get away with power hiking some of the steeper uphill sections. On flat races like this, it’s all running, and it’s just you against the clock.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
We are now looking at a little less than six weeks until the Leadville
Trail 100. I am still working on the Leadville Trail Marathon race
report, but I wanted to throw in a training update. It is not that I
cannot write the race report, but I keep learning/figuring out new
things about the race, so I have more information to add. This will be
the past four weeks. I will include total mileage, long run distance,
and my favorite workout of the week (doesn't necessarily mean
intervals).<br />
<br />

<br />
<b>May 31-June 6</b><br />*64 miles (7 runs)<br />
17 mile long run<br /><i>Favorite workout:</i> Fish Hatchery 5k...it wasn't pretty, but it was fun.<br />I
had to walk during a 5k for the first time in my life. I had only been
back at altitude for a few days and wanted to run well on the trails.
However, I was well over that red line during the first 3/4 of a mile
and ended up walking a nice uphill section of the course. Welcome back
to Leadville!<br />

<br />
<b> June 7-13</b><br />*64 miles (7 runs)<br />
18 mile long run<br />
<i>Favorite workout:</i> 2x[10x400m on :60 recovery]<br />This week was the second Leadville Running Company group run of the summer. Josh Arthur was there for the VFuel demo, and stuck around for the workout. We had a nice turnout and a fun group.<br />

<br />
<b>June 14-20</b><br />*73.2 miles (6 runs)<br />
20 and 26 mile long run<br />
<i>Favorite workout:</i> Leadville Trail Marathon<br />I
did not have a great showing at the marathon, but it was a much needed
learning experience. I will post more about that in my next blog. I also
took a spot into the Leadville 100, so that was exciting. I cannot say I
had plans to run a 100 this year, but it should be interesting.<br />

<b>June 21-27</b><br />*55.5 miles (6 runs)<br />
No long run<br />This
was my first "down week" in a while, and it was much needed. But really,
the main difference was just the lack of long run. I just focused on
getting in some easy trail miles.<br />

<b>June 28-July 4</b><br />*84 miles (7 runs)18 mile long run<br /><i>Favorite workout:</i> Tuesday in Boulder with the HTS crew. I ran my fastest altitude mile, so that was exciting.<br />This
week was the highest mileage week of my life. It beat my previous high
of 82 miles from 2009. This time I actually feel healthy and happy.<br />
<br />

<br />
<b>What have I learned?</b><br />Since training for the 100, I have
learned that it really is the small details that make a big difference. I
now pay way more attention to daily hydration, foam rolling, eating
soon after workouts, sleeping, and stretching. So far I have been able
to stay healthy through the stretch of higher mileage, and hope to
continue the streak.<br />

<br /><b>What's new?</b><br />The job at Leadville Outdoors/Leadville
Running Company has been going well. I get to work with a really fun
group of people, and have a very flexible schedule. Being able to walk
to work is great! I can run in the morning, work during the day, and
then have a few hours of sunlight after work.<br />

<br />
Also, I went to Montana for the first time over the 4th of July. Billings was flat and hot. It was fun though.<br />
I am starting to put my crew/pacers together for the Leadville 100, so I will be introducing them over the next few blog posts.<br />

I <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">am a little behind on race reports, so I am going to do 3 short summaries.</span></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZU__xBfUDO0/VXNSDzf_QvI/AAAAAAAAA4Q/Yr2WIZFGvdg/s640/blogger-image--1679038971.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-ZU__xBfUDO0/VXNSDzf_QvI/AAAAAAAAA4Q/Yr2WIZFGvdg/s640/blogger-image--1679038971.jpg" /></a></div>
</div>
<div>
<b>Gregory Invite 10k</b></div>
<div>
32:09 - 7th</div>
<div>
My PR going into this 10k was 32:44 from 2013. We weren't really sure what my legs speed and sea level fitness we're going into this race. We figured if I could run 32:40, it would be a good start to the season.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The best part about racing at NCC on a Thursday night, is that the races are under the lights and the weather is usually pretty good. However, this year it started raining about 800m into the race...but hey, rain is better than snow!</div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EbPEhqlRFdw/VXNS57GpXJI/AAAAAAAAA4w/MmoNc2Nt4TI/s640/blogger-image-652243501.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-EbPEhqlRFdw/VXNS57GpXJI/AAAAAAAAA4w/MmoNc2Nt4TI/s640/blogger-image-652243501.jpg" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The race was pretty uneventful. I got out quick, settled in, and ran. I think I may have not been aggressive enough through the middle section because nothing really hurt and I was able to close my last 400m in 68 seconds.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">

</div>
<div>
<b>Starved Rock Country Half Marathon</b></div>
<div>
1:14:39 - 1st</div>
<div>
Sleeping in your own bed and racing in your hometown is awesome...90% humidity is not. You never know what you're going to get in Illinois in May. Unfortunately this year it was 70s and humid.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Going into the race I had wanted to run 5:29/mile to end up in the 1:11:xx range.i knew it was warm and humid, but I still said I was going to go for it. I made it through the first 4 miles on pace, and then the wheels started to fall off. I was sweating way more than I should have been. I got to the half way point still on pace for a high 1:12ish finish. The course is out and back. The way back was nice because I could use the energy from the other runners try and get to the finish line quicker...even if it wasn't going to be a PR.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
It was fun crossing the finish line in first. A lot of family members, friends, and neighbors were there so it's always fun to win at home.</div>

<b>Fish Hatchery 5k</b></div>
<div>
21:31 - 2nd</div>
<div>
I had been back at altitude for a week and decided to race a trail 5k in Leadville. Probably not the best idea, but it was fun. I'm not going to lie, I had to walk a couple of the uphill sections...it wasn't pretty. But hey, I got to show off our Leadville Running Company jerseys, and they look pretty sweet!</div>

If you want a hot, fast, challenging, fun race...go to Vegas! There really isn't anything too technical about the course, it is mostly hard packed rocks/sand, with a couple loose sandy spots. I had a good four week stretch, then it caught up with me with about a week left in the ski season. I took a few extra shifts at work and I found myself putting in fifty hour "weeks" in four days. There are only so many nights you can get four to five hours of sleep before it catches up with you. I still managed to put in 30-40 mile weeks (I am a very low mileage runner) so my mileage really didn't suffer.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y1uO-ptvSDA/VTpg3x9kgiI/AAAAAAAAA0o/VPULUkXWEAk/s640/blogger-image-1771234630.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y1uO-ptvSDA/VTpg3x9kgiI/AAAAAAAAA0o/VPULUkXWEAk/s640/blogger-image-1771234630.jpg"></a></div></div><div><br></div><div>I would say that my first real race of the season is on Sunday -- Xterra Lake Las Vegas Trail 21k. This is a good chance to test trail fitness and see how my body reacts going from 10,200ft to 5400ft to 1800ft. But, the most important thing is to have fun.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fXJ7fdhcQ3g/VTphMpoIsqI/AAAAAAAAA1Y/zK2OMxOdpB4/s640/blogger-image-163111121.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-fXJ7fdhcQ3g/VTphMpoIsqI/AAAAAAAAA1Y/zK2OMxOdpB4/s640/blogger-image-163111121.jpg"></a></div></div><div><br></div><div>As many of you know, I started being coached by Brad Hudson of Hudson Training Systems in April. So far I have been happy and challenge with the workouts. I realized I really didn't know that much about training at 10,200ft, but I still want to get fast! The great thing about ski season being over is I now have more options to come down for his group speed workout. I am starting to lose some leg speed by doing most of my training in Leadville, so it is nice to go down to Boulder have a quick group to train with.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_LJAq2kgBXM/VTpg6Ro9-XI/AAAAAAAAA0w/t0rA2F6RdHQ/s640/blogger-image-1917158723.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_LJAq2kgBXM/VTpg6Ro9-XI/AAAAAAAAA0w/t0rA2F6RdHQ/s640/blogger-image-1917158723.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>My friend Anthony asked me how training has changed since moving to 10,200ft. I think there are a few big changes. The first change is that pace is slower on everything. You can put forth the same effort, but still be running slower than Boulder or sea level. That can start to mess with your mind and make you wonder if you're slow, lacking fitness, or if it is just the altitude. The second biggest change is there is always snow on the ground. The cushioning from the snow is nice, but that also slows you down. Just another thing to factor into the workout. And, the third thing is that to do speed work, you need to find something downhill. You learn to become good at downhill running.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y2Xzic9Zpxc/VTphA4tAB5I/AAAAAAAAA1A/YgxglF46EN0/s640/blogger-image-63413419.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-y2Xzic9Zpxc/VTphA4tAB5I/AAAAAAAAA1A/YgxglF46EN0/s640/blogger-image-63413419.jpg"></a></div></div><div><br></div><div>I had a quick trip to California in late March, and this is probably my favorite picture from the trip.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Te-GOQMFbtM/VTphDyWv5BI/AAAAAAAAA1I/m5GgsywbFQQ/s640/blogger-image--809021462.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Te-GOQMFbtM/VTphDyWv5BI/AAAAAAAAA1I/m5GgsywbFQQ/s640/blogger-image--809021462.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>College friends also came to visit in March. I turned 25 on Saturday. After reading many articles about "the aging athlete" and "speed training as you age" or... Okay, so maybe I'm not quite there yet, and I guess the only real difference now is that I am in the 25-29AG...and car insurance goes down. Wootwoo! I spent my birthday watching a weekend of ski joring. If you don't know what that is, look it up on YouTube.</span></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zEfh_EI-3vs/VP9dDpZuPxI/AAAAAAAAAz4/CgOUlAffsek/s640/blogger-image--1208357737.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zEfh_EI-3vs/VP9dDpZuPxI/AAAAAAAAAz4/CgOUlAffsek/s640/blogger-image--1208357737.jpg"></a></div>I'm so mature ^</div><div><br></div><div>Anyway, I had somebody ask, <b>"What did mono and the setback with injury teach you? Do you think you came out of both having learned something important?"</b></div><div>This is was a difficult question for me since I tend to be a pretty stubborn person. The biggest thing I learned from mono (and probably injury too) is that recovery is important. I knew recovering from mono would be a long process, but I'm not sure I actually understood how long.</div><div>The bone bruise (foot) came from a bad step, followed by 12 miles of pounding. I had already finished 13 miles, but still had 12 to go. Looking back on it, should I have been running 25 miles only 3 weeks after being cleared to run again? But, like I said a few weeks ago, I wanted to go down to FL on my 25th birthday and lay down a solid 50 miler. I do not regret that I didn't get to race, but I definitely think I next time I will make a better choice.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wONYOysltbw/VP9dH3bMH8I/AAAAAAAAA0I/a5NQwyXWU-c/s640/blogger-image-1465769816.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-wONYOysltbw/VP9dH3bMH8I/AAAAAAAAA0I/a5NQwyXWU-c/s640/blogger-image-1465769816.jpg"></a></div></div><div>Also, living and training at altitude requires much more recovery. I have a feeling that by living a 10,200ft and still getting over mono, recovery is going to be a huge factor for me. If I want to have any chance at a successful late spring, summer, or fall, then I need to pay attention now.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BINUeJ86BWU/VP9dF9lqUnI/AAAAAAAAA0A/PIzF7b0Vz4k/s640/blogger-image-1915922984.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-BINUeJ86BWU/VP9dF9lqUnI/AAAAAAAAA0A/PIzF7b0Vz4k/s640/blogger-image-1915922984.jpg"></a></div></div><div>The other takeaway is that good shoes are key. I realized that I had over 800 miles on my Brooks Ghosts when I injured myself. Normally I am ~400 miles per pair of shoes before I get new shoes. A weakened body + old shoes probably was not the best mix. Right now I am running in the Hoka Clifton and they have been wonderful in getting me back out there.</div><div><br></div><div>Training</div><div>Workout #1: 1x3, 1x2 @ MP</div><div>Warm up, 3 miles at marathon pace, 1 mile easy, 2 miles at marathon pace, cool down. I was going to try 2x3, but the wind and ice broke me down. I still had 5 miles of quality for the day, so it's not like I had a bad workout.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-IzgVpcmqMwo/VP9c_c5dIuI/AAAAAAAAAzo/8UMWcesLe1A/s640/blogger-image-2117755880.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-IzgVpcmqMwo/VP9c_c5dIuI/AAAAAAAAAzo/8UMWcesLe1A/s640/blogger-image-2117755880.jpg"></a></div></div><div>Workout #2 - 3x[2:1/1:2] Fartlek</div><div>The purpose of this workout was just to get the legs out and moving fast. I think there are 2 sides to this question - road and trail. I wasn't exactly sure how to answer this since I will be doing more trail stuff early, and road stuff later. So, here are my two picks.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3XV5B0gcPmM/VPiUiNW2kQI/AAAAAAAAAy0/mDxSql891tQ/s640/blogger-image-158672774.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-3XV5B0gcPmM/VPiUiNW2kQI/AAAAAAAAAy0/mDxSql891tQ/s640/blogger-image-158672774.jpg"></a></div></div><div>My road pick is the Indinapolis Monumental Marathon in November. I <span style="font-family: 'Helvetica Neue Light', HelveticaNeue-Light, helvetica, arial, sans-serif;">have only heard great things about this race, and there are always some fast times. Flat course, cool weather, and a good mix of competition should make for an exciting race. Also, with the race being in November, it gives me time to build upon spring/summer/fall fitness. The one downside to a November race is I will have been racing all spring, summer, and fall -- will that leave me flat in Novmeber, or ready to PR.</span></div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vE-WNdqkX6c/VPiUkTJderI/AAAAAAAAAy8/43aJ5O7eie4/s640/blogger-image--1488213150.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-vE-WNdqkX6c/VPiUkTJderI/AAAAAAAAAy8/43aJ5O7eie4/s640/blogger-image--1488213150.jpg"></a></div></div><div>I had a hard time picking a trail race. So many things can come into play -- elevation gain, temperature, humidity, technicality of the course, etc. It will be my first 50 miler, but I think Silver Rush 50 is my best chance of racing at peak fitness. Why would I say a 50M at 10,200ft? I live at 10,200ft and can train on the course, so that is a plus. I will also be racing the trail marathon a month before, so there will hopefully be a fitness bump from that. I am really not sure how my body will react to racing that length, but I think that will be my best chance.</div><div><br></div><div>Training Update</div><div><br></div><div>Feb 15-21</div><div>I was finally able to start running again thanks to acupuncture, and the Hoka Clifton. I am very happy with the year overall, and these are my top 5 race moments.</span></div><div><br></div><div><b>5. Ironman 70.3 NOLA</b></div><div><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-spoAAtCjebE/VJuNz-4t17I/AAAAAAAAAv8/v_IAaP8tGMg/s640/blogger-image-704317887.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-spoAAtCjebE/VJuNz-4t17I/AAAAAAAAAv8/v_IAaP8tGMg/s640/blogger-image-704317887.jpg"></a></div></b></div><div>Just about everything wet wrong nutritionally in NOLA, but somehow I still snagged a spot to Worlds. I went into the race prepared to have a great race. I felt fresh and peppy. A great swim (for me) set me up to have a great day. Unfortunately I dropped my fluids early in the bike, and I was never able to recover from it. I ended up walking and sitting down quite a bit on the run, but I fought through it. Keeping a positive attitude can go a long way in endurance sports - a great lesson to learn.</div><div><br></div><div><b>4. 50k debut</b></div><div><b><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-449zSZpotFA/VJuN2NOwlXI/AAAAAAAAAwE/YuGCQ7isKcg/s640/blogger-image-219597721.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-449zSZpotFA/VJuN2NOwlXI/AAAAAAAAAwE/YuGCQ7isKcg/s640/blogger-image-219597721.jpg"></a></div></b></div><div>I took a road trip out to California with a new German friend and raced the Malibu Canyon 50k. 6300ft of elevation gain. Set the 25k course record during the 50k. Finished 3rd OA. All of tha was exciting, but so was the actually road trip. He is in the states traveling for a few months and wanted to go from Denver to LA. We left Denver in a snow storm and made it to Vegas that night. It was great to see his reaction as we were driving through to CO mountains, UT canyons, and all of the lights of Vegas. It definitely made time fly by.</div><div><br></div><div><b>3. I honestly believe that was the best thing I could have done. There was not any pressure on me to perform and I felt like I could just go and soak in the experience. During the swim something inside me said, "no,you're here to compete - get it done." I ended up with a PR swim and bike, along with a 10 minute overall PR. I couldn't have had a better ending. I still get people that tell me, "you're wasting your talent by not racing tri" or, "it's a shame you quit so young." I may come back to it someday, but I don't have plans to at the moment. New adventures await.</div><div><br></div><div><b>1. I could have picked a race win or course record as my favorite moment, but this trumps them all. It was one of those days where things just kind of clicked and then I got to give a buddy a high five. People were like "you just made his day," but really, he made mine. Those are the moments I love about racing.</div><div><br></div><div>Thanks for reading. I took the lead about 1k in and figured if I was going to hurt, I may as well make everybody else hurt too. I came through the first mile in 4:57 and almost had to check my shorts. That was the first sub 5 mile I had popped off at altitude. I came through 2 miles in about 10:10 and was still feeling good. I said I was done racing and just wanted to do my own thing...and that is exactly what I have been doing. I entered a lot of events that sounded fun. I just went and ran. I have met a lot great people at these events, and for that I am truly thankful. I can't wait to see what exciting adventures are in store for 2015. The first section was flat (woohoo) and then you start to climb.</div><div><br></div><div>I know I am not the best climber, but I have a pretty simple system - run the flats and downhills, power hike the uphill. I can power hike up the hills faster than I can "run."</div><div><br></div><div>Around mile 5 I found myself in the lead group of 4. I started to think that this was going to be the pack that the top 3 OA came out of and they are all stronger climbers than me. With this being a 2 lap course, I did not like my chances of holding them off the second loop. There is a little downhill between miles 6-7 and I decided to make my move. My goal was to open up a gap on the short downhill. Get over the next climb as quickly as possible, then open it up on the descent to the turnaround. I figured if I could put a couple minutes on them going I to lap 2, I might have a chance to hold on for the climb back to the top.</div><div><br></div><div>My plan to gap them seemed like a good idea that the time. What I didn't know is that I would come through 25k at tap 2 minutes off the 25k course record.</div><div><br></div><div>I was fine for the next flat section, but then the climbing started. I was starting to cramp, and I know I would not be able to run. It was warm, sunny, and winds up to 40mph. I was running scared knowing my lead was probably shrinking by the second.</div><div><br></div><div>20.5 miles in, the eventual race winner passed me during the grinding uphill. He said, "run with me," as he went by. Clearly the goal was to run ahead of him, and not with him, but I could not make it up the hill fast enough.</div><div><br></div><div>Then at mile 22, the 2nd place guy passed me. I still had a bit of climbing and 9 miles to try and hold on for 3rd.</div><div><br></div><div>When I finally made it to the top, all I could think was, "uggh, downhill!" My legs were cramping and it is a very steep downhill. Every step hurt. After a couple miles of downhill I was relieved to finally be on a flat section.</div><div><br></div><div>I saw Sergio about 2 miles from the finish and he took some GoPro video. I just remember saying, "I have no idea what is going on behind me, all I know is I can walk and shuffle." About 2 minutes later Anthony came into view again. I had 2 miles to try and hold him off. Really, the decision had been made a few weeks ago, but it took some time to be okay with the decision. A lot of people were shocked and wanted to know why. I had many people tell me, "But you love triathlon." True, triathlon can be fun, but my heart/mind just has not been in it. After a long talk with Coach Steve, I have decided to purse other adventures next year.</span><br><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JelcrzMMmNw/VBHQJsfXhoI/AAAAAAAAAoQ/EhRxpv0EddM/s640/blogger-image--1685568113.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-JelcrzMMmNw/VBHQJsfXhoI/AAAAAAAAAoQ/EhRxpv0EddM/s640/blogger-image--1685568113.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div><b>Thursday - Travel</b></div><div>Fly and drive in Canada. If you are looking for a stunning course...Mont Tremblant is it. The scenery is awesome. I'm not sure there is a flat spot on the bike course, but it is so much fun. I rode without a power meter, so I have no idea what kind of wattage I was hitting. I just know my legs felt comfortable spinning and I am 99% sure I used every gear at some point. Of the 3 hills course I have done (Branson x2, Vegas, and MT), Mont Tremblant is my favorite for sure. The pavement quality is awesome, the crowd support is sweet, and it is an honest course.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-VQuGe05XkrY/VBHQPSvemhI/AAAAAAAAAoo/VvrFgXvKPUM/s640/blogger-image--1801809200.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-VQuGe05XkrY/VBHQPSvemhI/AAAAAAAAAoo/VvrFgXvKPUM/s640/blogger-image--1801809200.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div><br></div><div>My favorite sections of the course are the out and back through the town of Mont Tremblant and the last 20km on the bike. Ride hard for 70km, but to better save something for the last 20km and the run. The hilly last 20km is just getting your legs warmed up for the run rollers on the run.</div><div><br></div><div><b>T2 - 1:03</b></div><div>In and out. By 10k in I was comfortable but I knew loop two could be rough. I had two issues going on - a) I had to pee b) I needed solid nutrition. Normally I could take care of issue A while running - if you are relaxed it should not be a problem. Apparently I was not relaxed and I finally had to stop around 15km into the run and go. B, on the other hand, was a major issue. I was hungry and a liquid would not fill the void. I basically had a coal/perform cocktail from 14km on and could not shake it. Was I happy with a 1:24 run? No, but I was happy with the race I put together overall. Colorado (Boulder) is a wonderful place and I look forward to seeig what is out there. I picked up a pair of cross country skis right before Worlds, so I am actually slightly excited for snow. We met up with the Estes Park Trail Runners and went out to Cow Creek Trailhead. From there we did the out and back to Bridal Veil Fallls, and the added on a couple extra miles. Mark was saying he was still tired from the marathon he ran the week before...but he sure put the hurt on, on the way up to the falls.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-wTkDi3Y2rYg/U40R6pqpy7I/AAAAAAAAAjY/E7AjxddZh-8/s640/blogger-image-357103758.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-wTkDi3Y2rYg/U40R6pqpy7I/AAAAAAAAAjY/E7AjxddZh-8/s640/blogger-image-357103758.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Sunday afternoon I had my first real mountain biking experience. Mark took me out on a trail and it was rough. A lot of up/downhill and "ballsy" sections... Great for a first timer...right? Riding up to 9000+ feet sure made for an interesting time. I was starting to get a little too comfortable descending and I flipped over my handlebars on a technical downhill section. It was awesome! Let's just say I am in love with mountain biking!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8TNRnla59-Y/U40SAWqrTQI/AAAAAAAAAjw/M1cb1_iRSV4/s640/blogger-image-1993026074.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-8TNRnla59-Y/U40SAWqrTQI/AAAAAAAAAjw/M1cb1_iRSV4/s640/blogger-image-1993026074.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Monday</div><div><br></div><div>I had my first swim in Estes on Monday. The pool is located at 8,000ft. I did my normal warm up and was about 6 seconds/100yds slower during the warm up. For my main set so did 2x[10x100 on :15 RI]. I was able to come within about 3 seconds of my normal times...but it was not pretty. I felt tired and could definitely tell the difference between CO and IL.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Iroh1HUMwmw/U40R25psUZI/AAAAAAAAAjI/i1OBCDYh5pE/s640/blogger-image-665713461.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-Iroh1HUMwmw/U40R25psUZI/AAAAAAAAAjI/i1OBCDYh5pE/s640/blogger-image-665713461.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>In the afternoon I met up with Mark and Alan again for a trail run. It was supposed to be the Twin Owls Loop from the Lumpy Ridge Trailhead - maybe 11 miles. I am not the best with directions and ended up going way off course. I finished with 13 miles...and 2:26 run time. So that ended up being my longest duration run...ever. I'm not so sure I really ran everything - there were some pretty wicked hikes out of some sections. Either way that was a lot of time on my feet.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-nIsc0MMKiIM/U40R8vLdt3I/AAAAAAAAAjg/xeAH-SeRZ8c/s640/blogger-image--764288401.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-nIsc0MMKiIM/U40R8vLdt3I/AAAAAAAAAjg/xeAH-SeRZ8c/s640/blogger-image--764288401.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>The log run was fueled by a new product I am trying called ViFuel. I like the 70.3 (and think it will be my best distance someday), but I really love speed! So...I decided to put together a string of some shorter stuff.<div><br></div><div>Litchfield Spring Duathlon</div><div>2nd OA</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-YuUo1f7n_xY/U4eFeFql8YI/AAAAAAAAAh8/oBOWcdPmdY4/s640/blogger-image-553923528.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-YuUo1f7n_xY/U4eFeFql8YI/AAAAAAAAAh8/oBOWcdPmdY4/s640/blogger-image-553923528.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>6 days after NOLA I was on the start line of a 2 mile run/12 mile bike/2 mile run. I knew I was not fully recovered, but I love a good duathlon, so I could not pass it up. I also made the decision to be aggressive on the first run to and see what happened.</div><div><br></div><div>I was first onto the bike. I was in the lead until mile 5 or so, then Randy Murdick came flying by me like I was in slow motion. He's known for being a great biker, so I was just hoping to stay close for run #2. I was passed again by another guy. We ended up going off course and adding about 3/4 mile to the course. Randy was too far gone as I came off the bike in 4th. I ran my way back to 2nd with a mediocre run. It was a fun event and I would go do it again!</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-T-dqPruqhW8/U4eFlVnIoEI/AAAAAAAAAiU/XR6X5DLiGn8/s640/blogger-image-734251686.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-T-dqPruqhW8/U4eFlVnIoEI/AAAAAAAAAiU/XR6X5DLiGn8/s640/blogger-image-734251686.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Try Tri SIUe - 1st OA</div><div>Short stuff hurts! I had no idea who was in the race, I just wanted to go have a solid day. I still felt like I was in a rut, but I was determined to break out of it. I took the lead early and never really looked back. There are a couple out and back sections, so a couple miles in so decided to pus the pace and open up the gap even more. I knew I was running faster than I should be, but I wanted to give myself a cushion if I blew up. The last 2 miles were into the wind, and tr last mile is ahead hal uphill..I was starting to feel it. I ended up hanging on for the win and $100.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-YNKbQUaEPiQ/U4eFgdQBTgI/AAAAAAAAAiE/j-Ew0PB24GY/s640/blogger-image-1644155139.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-YNKbQUaEPiQ/U4eFgdQBTgI/AAAAAAAAAiE/j-Ew0PB24GY/s640/blogger-image-1644155139.jpg"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-S4YFVtrecDA/U4eFW_c6mPI/AAAAAAAAAhs/ch6wSObm0GQ/s640/blogger-image--1488899417.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-S4YFVtrecDA/U4eFW_c6mPI/AAAAAAAAAhs/ch6wSObm0GQ/s640/blogger-image--1488899417.jpg"></a></div><br></div><div>Streator Family YMCA Memorial Day 5k</div><div>Should I have raced 2 days in a row? Short recap: Okay swim, dropped a bottle and cramped/threw
up/blew up on bike, cramped and walk/ran the run. I ended up in med tent for 2
IV bags upon crossing the finish line. Somehow still managed to be 2nd
in AG and snag a spot to 70.3 Worlds. Happy/thankful to have
qualified, but that is not how I had imagined it happening!<br />

Swim:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have been spending a lot of time in the pool and I am
considerably faster than I was before (in the pool). My open water swimming still does not
match up with my pool swimming, but that will hopefully come with more experience
in open water. I cannot be mad about my swim, because it was a half ironman PR
swim by almost 2:00. I also came out of the water feeling fresh and ready to
ride. The swim course is an “M” and kind of difficult to navigate – the sun was
coming up and we were looking for yellow turn buoys. Besides the water tasting
funny and looking pretty dirty, I thought the swim conditions were okay. I
exited the water in 17th in my AG, which happens to be the highest I
have ever been out of the water! Woohoo!</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">She looks WAY too happy.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Bike:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The bike course is essentially a “Y” on closed roads. I
think it is a great course – flat and closed roads. I was told to expect a
headwind on the way out, and a tailwind on the way back in. I know we had a
headwind on the way out, but I honestly cannot tell you what the wind did on
the way back in. All I know is that it was not a tailwind, and we had a
headwind toward the end of the bike course. Gotta love when the wind shifts.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I felt fresh out of the water and onto the bike. I believe I
was under my target wattage for the first 5-10 miles, and was passing quite a
few guys in my AG. Everything seemed to be going well. I traded my empty bottle
at the first aid station and was ready to hit my target watts. Somewhere
between miles 17-18 I dropped my water bottle. I knew it was going to be a long
day. At mile 25 I was already cramping, at mile 30 I had pretty much stopped
sweating, and by mile 35 I was throwing up on the bike. At the next aid station
I decided to take water to dump on myself and drink, along with IM Perform to
try and get some of the calories/electrolytes back. I was hurting pretty bad at
this point. The next 10ish miles were just pure torture – into the wind and
people were blowing by me. I was struggling to hold 18ish mph. At the last aid
station on the bike (mile 50) I took two waters. With two miles to go, I was
cramped so bad that I couldn’t pedal and could only coast. I was seriously
considering walking my bike into t2.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Blue skies.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Coming into T2 I knew the run was going to be painful, but I
was ready for it. The first couple steps off the bike actually felt great. At
this point I thought I was already out of the AG race, but I was not too sure. I had not been passed by anyone in my AG on the bike, so I thought maybe there might be a slight chance I was still in the race.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The first ¼ mile on the run felt great. I started thinking I
may be able to save the race. Then BOOM! Cramping – legs and arms. I knew I was
in trouble. The first 6 miles of the run course have a couple bridges and
overpass crossings, so it was not flat. At the first aid station I planned on
taking Perform and Coke. I guess they didn’t have the coke ready, so I took
perform and ice. At mile two, I was finally able to get Coke…unfortunately it
was not flat and I started throwing up shortly after drinking it. I was
miserable, but determined not to walk.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Around mile 7 or 8 – I really do not remember – there was a
lady cheering us on yelling, “You look great. You’re doing awesome.” …and I was
walking, getting ready to stop and stretch. I was bent over in the middle of
the street, so cramped up that it probably looked like I was trying to do some
yoga pose…and the race photographer was there. Awesome. I decided to try and
run by, but I don’t think I was too successful. I had to stop and do more yoga
in the street, haha. As all of this was going on, a race support vehicle
stopped and a guy asked me if I was okay. I think I said, “no” and continued to
stagger down the street. He then got on the radio the alert other race vehicles
to watch for me coming down the road – I guess I didn’t look too good.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I look great...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
At mile 8 I came up on a kid with a “20” on his calf. I told
myself I needed to make the pass, and then get around the corner so I could
start walking again without him seeing me. Right before turning the corner I
looked back and saw him walking. That was when I made the decision to run if he
ran, and I could walk if he walked. At that point, I had a feeling that we were
somewhere near the podium for our AG, but I still didn’t think it would be a
Worlds spot.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Over the next couple miles, I was passed by a lot of M40-49.
As they would come up on me, they would say stuff along the lines of, “You’re
younger and faster than me, run with me.” But I could honestly only run with
them for a minute at a time before having to walk. It was not pretty, but I am
very thankful to have had multiple running partners to drag me though that last
5 miles. I was in more pain that I have ever been in, and mentally I was ready
to be taken away in an ambulance before dropping out. My head was throbbing, my
body was on fire, and I felt like I had knives stabbing my quads, arms, and
feet.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">About to fall over...</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I finally made it to the finish line and happened to be
cramping and kind of fell over. The volunteers that caught me said, “You don’t
look too good.” In my less than coherent state, I replied, “How rude.” She laughed
and brought me to the med tent. They asked me how I was feeling and told me I
was one of the more rough looking people they had seen so far. Great. They
started an IV bag. After my first IV bag they looked at me and decided I needed
another one… Did I really look <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">that</i>
bad?! I was feeling pretty alright after the second bag though. So thank you to
the wonderful medical staff for taking care of me!</div>

I can’t say that I am thrilled with how my race went, but I
am happy to have qualified. I think I was just disappointed that I put in the
work to have a great race, and then things just kind of fell apart on race day.
I know that race did not show the fitness/progress I’ve made since last year. I
do think it shows that I am mentally a lot stronger this year than other years.
Last year in Vegas I think my mind gave up on the race before my body did. This
year, my body was shutting down, but I was fully prepared to suffer for as long
as I needed to.</div>

The kids I coach found my blog, and told me I need I need to

On March 10 I started coaching a junior high track and field
team. So far it has been a great experience – I just wish it would not rain so
much. I have learned many things in the first month of coaching, but most of
the things are what the athletes say about me.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>The students are not afraid to say what they think, so I figured I would
share a few things with you:</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
1. I’m mean. I actually make them do workouts. *gasp*</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
2. I have a GameBoy Color— I’m old.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
3. Everybody Loves Raymond is my favorite TV show – once
again, I’m old.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
4. Everybody Loves Raymond is on TV Land… You guessed it,
I’m old.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
5. I was born in 1990—yep, I’m old.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So yeah, this is what my athletes have taught me so far. We
still have 4 weeks left in the season, so I am sure they will continue to let
me know how old I am…everyday.</div>

We have only had one track meet so far…well we had half of a
track meet and then it got rained out. The next meet was cancelled and
rescheduled due to severe storms. The rescheduled meet was cancelled because of
rain. They were going to reschedule the rescheduled meet, but we could not find
a day that works. Anyway in the first meet, we had a pretty awesome showing
from our milers. Our guys went 5:37, 5:54, 6:04 in the season opener – all
running PRs. We also had a girl run 5:58. They are all faster at the mile in junior
high than I was!

Now, 70.3 NOLA. I say that every race is a new and different
experience…this will not be an exception. Training for NOLA had been great
while in Florida. I do not regret coming back to Illinois, but it made training
a little more difficult. I got sick within the first 2 days of being back in
the state. Always fun. Then I guess it must have been one of the snow covered
long runs I did that triggered an old injury, and I found myself in the walking
boot for a couple weeks. I was going to try and run through it, but I found
myself almost in tears less than 2 miles into runs. At that point I figured it
was time to let the foot rest. I was still able to swim and bike without much
pain, but running was out of the question. I also found myself on the trainer
for pretty much 95% of my rides upon arrival in Illinois. Normally I can just
suck it up and get it done, but after almost 95% of rides outdoor in FL, riding
the trainer indoors really was not much fun. Over the past month, the one thing
I will say that has been great is swimming. I have really been enjoying it, and
I have made some good progress in the pool. I have never been known for being a
strong open water swimmer, but I am hoping some of the things I have been
figuring out will help.

So what does it all mean? Well, my foot and ankle are pain
free now, so that is a good sign. Basically all I can do is focus on what I can
control—power, nutrition, staying focused on the task at hand. Chrissie Wellington found a way to win when she was less than 100%. I am by no means on the same level as Chrissie, but it shows how important it is to be mentally tough. I am excited to
race!</div>
